26-year-old woman confirmed with city’s first case of Japanese encephalitis this year

A 26-year-old woman, surnamed Wong, was admitted to Tuen Mun hospital earlier this month with a fever, headache and vomiting. Health authorities have today confirmed that the is suffering form Japanese encephalitis, Hong Kong’s first reported case this year.

Centre of Health Protection authorities confirmed that Wong’s blood samples showed she contracted the mosquito-borne disease. Wong cannot recall if she had any mosquito bites, and has no travel history or animal contact, her house also showed no symptoms.

However, a 52-year-old man living in the same estate, Tin Heng Estate, in Tin Shui Wai also confirmed to have contracted Japanese encephalitis last year, reports The Standard
