230 thousand Hong Kong families waiting for public housing

How disorganised can the Hong Kong Housing Department be? There are currently a record number of 230 thousand families, not individuals, families waiting for public housing but if proper structures were put in place some may have a roof above their heads!

The Audit Commission has discovered that 12 thousand public housing flats have been vacant for a long time, some 46 units have been vacant for more than 10 years.

They also found that around 2,400 families are occupying more than one apartment. The Audit Commission is urging the Housing Department to encourage families to stop hogging more apartments than needed and return at least one apartment to help those who really need the place.

Currently, the waiting period for public housing is crazy long, nearly 30 per cent of the applicants need to wait for at least three years and seven per cent need to wait for more than five years.
