A two-year-old girl living in mainland China was allegedly abandoned by her mother last week and spent four days at a Guangdong orphanage before her father found her, local media reports.
The child’s father, who is a Hongkonger residing in Guangdong, went to the orphanage on Monday where he was tearfully reunited with his daughter. Following DNA testing to confirm his relation to the girl, the man was allowed to bring his daughter back home.
According to Apple Daily, he claimed to have recently got into an argument with his wife, during which she said she would give up their daughter.
Last Thursday, a man walking through a square in Huizhou, a city in Guangzhou, was stopped by a woman in her 30s who was pushing a stroller. She allegedly asked him to watch the girl while she went to a nearby public toilet.
After waiting fruitlessly for about an hour, the man called the police. They found a note tucked into the toddler’s stroller, which read, “Our daughter was born on May 3, 2014. She has congenital disorders. Our family is poor and doesn’t have the means to care for her. We hope she is adopted by good people.”
The child was taken into a local orphanage, but was not found to have any congenital disorders by doctors. Her father reportedly only realised what had happened after his daughter’s abandonment made the news, and immediately went to pick her up.
Abandoning a child is a criminal offence in mainland China, but whether the girl’s parents will be charged is still unclear.
