Man lies about sick grandma, lands himself and 2 friends in jail for robbery

Here’s a story about a group of terrible people who happened to be friends.

Lam Gwing-chung, 22, was jailed for five years and four months on Wednesday for robbing a jewellery store in Mong Kok along with two friends Lo Chun-hin, 21, and Lee Ka-yiu, 24.

The two latter men received more lenient sentences of three years and 10 months and four years and four months, respectively, because Lam asked them to help him rob the CTMA Centre so he could pay the hospital bills of his sick grandmother.

In reality, the unemployed man gambled the money away in Macau, making him the worst person in this story.

Lo and Lee only found this out a year later when in court for the robbery.

In July last year, Lo pretended to be a customer at the jewellery store before Lam rushed in, held a knife to the clerk and helped himself to three Rolex watches worth HKD370,000. See, worst person.

Lee then grabbed a taxi and escaped with Lam, leaving Lo behind to get arrested at the scene, making both these guys pretty crappy friends.

Lo, no doubt feeling a bit hard done by at the hands of his crappy friends, grassed his buddies up to the cops and helped the police track them down at the Hong Kong-Macau ferry terminal a few days later. Sure, helping the police is the “right” thing to do, but we hear ratting out your mates is frowned upon in criminal scenes.

The moral of this moralless story? Bad people don’t deserve friends, but if they’re going to have some, they might as well have friends like these.
