2 hikers dead after getting swept out to sea in Sai Kung

A 57-year-old woman and 56-year-old man were both killed yesterday after they were swept to sea in Sai Kung.

The woman, surnamed Yip, and the man, surnamed Lee, were hiking around Tai Au Mun in Clear Water Bay Country Park with three other women including Lee’s wife and daughter-in-law, HK01 reports.

When they reached Po Toi O Village at around 1:30pm, Yip was swept out to sea after she stopped to look at something on the shore.

Lee jumped into the water to save her, but was unable to return to safety. His wife called the police, who conducted a joint search with divers from the Fire Services Department.

They soon found the pair unconscious around 50 metres away from the shore and rushed them to hospital.

Yip and Lee were declared dead at 2:48pm and 4:14pm, respectively.
