2 hikers dead, 2 injured in 4 separate incidents on same day

Yesterday a 63-year-old hiker, surnamed Lo, died after slipping while hiking Devil’s Peak in Lei Yue Mun.

The body of a missing hiker, 62 and surnamed Yip, was also found on Mount Parker in Quarry Bay after having been last seen on Saturday morning.

In a third separate incident, a man, 55, had to be rescued by helicopter from a cliff not far from where Lo fell. He did not sustain any injuries and did not need medical treatment.

Finally, a 20-year-old man is in critical condition after falling down a ravine while walking along the Double Dragon River in Lantau Island.

Lo had been hiking Devil’s Peak with a friend, starting from Sam Ka Village, Lei Yue Mun, and ending in Tiu Keng Leng, Sai Kung. His companion, who was walking ahead of him on a rocky seashore, suddenly noticed that he had disappeared, reports Apple Daily.

He spotted his friend in the water below, and asked a fellow hiker to help pull him out.

A government helicopter arrived on the scene to take the man to Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern Hospital in Chai Wan. He was declared dead later that evening at 8pm.

Lo, who worked as a driver, sustained injuries to his left shoulder, right eye, and head. He is survived by his wife and his three adult sons.

Just the day before, he embarked on a hike with three other friends. The plan was to start and ended at the same points, but used different routes. That friend believes Lo may have altered the route in the hope of making it to work by 10am.

The daughter of the missing hiker posted a plea for help on Facebook on Saturday after he didn’t turn up for work nor pick up the phone, reports Apple Daily.

Yip went for a solo hike at 11am before he was meant to show up to his job at the liaison office at 4pm.

At 2pm on Sunday, police officers and firefighters recovered his body after a five-hour search.

According to his 20-year-old daughter, he had been diagnosed with diabetes three years ago and had taken up hiking to improve his health.

Because Yip had not sustained any obvious injures and his belongings were still on his body, it is suspected that he suffered a heart attack.

He is survived by his daughter and wife of almost 40 years.
