A teenager fell to his death from a shopping mall escalator in Sha Tin’s New Town Plaza shopping mall Thursday morning.
The 19-year-old, surnamed Tang, plummeted five flights down from the eighth floor escalator to mall’s atrium, according to HK01.
Unconscious, he was taken to Prince of Wales Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Mall staff used rolling notice boards to block off the blood-stained area. Police said they did not find a suicide note, and are waiting for autopsy results to determine the cause of death.
In 2004, Times Square in Causeway Bay added what the South China Morning Post referred to as 1.8 meter-high “anti-suicide fencing” after three suicides took place inside the shopping centers, all from the eighth floor, in just over two years.
