18-month-old toddler hit by car in Yuen Long dies from injuries

A toddler who was learning how to walk died yesterday after he wandered away from his parents and got hit by a car in Yuen Long. 

Tang Man-fai, 18 months old, was walking near his home in Nam Hang Tsuen with his parents at around 2pm yesterday, Apple Daily reports. His parents stopped to greet an acquantance of theirs, a 55-year-old man surnamed Lee, who was in his black Mercedes Benz.

The child reportedly walked in front of the car without any of the adults noticing and was struck down by the right front wheel of Lee’s car when he prepared to make a U-turn, according to a police statement.

Tang was rushed to Pok Oi Hospital with serious head injuries and later transferred to Tuen Mun Hospital, where he was certified dead at 7:57pm.

Lee was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving causing death and is being detained for further questioning. An investigation by police officers from the New Territories North District is underway.
