15-year-old caught smuggling HKD510,000 of suspected heroin from mainland China to Hong Kong

A 15-year-old boy was arrested over the weekend after he was caught trying to bring HKD510,000 worth of suspected heroin from China to Hong Kong.

Ming Pao reports that Narcotics Bureau officers acting on intelligence intercepted the teen, surnamed Mak, at the arrivals hall of Lo Wu Border Control Point at around 1pm on Saturday.

Around 750 grams of suspected heroin with an estimated street value of HKD510,000 was found inside Mak’s rucksack and he was arrested on suspicion of drug trafficking.

Barrister Albert Luk told Ming Pao that, depending on the drugs’ purity, Mak could be sentenced for “at least” 20 years. He reasoned that a lesser sentence could spur drug cartels to lure more young people into trafficking narcotics.
