1,400 homeless roam the streets, double government estimates

The government’s last citywide tally put the city’s homeless figure at 674, which was made more than 15 years ago. City University, however, found that the number of homeless people in Hong Kong is likely to be double that of previous government estimates, putting the figure at 1,414.

By counting at 180 locations, including temporary shelters and 24-hour restaurant chains, the eight-month long outreach project surveyed 323 homeless people, and found that their average salary is HK$5,688. At that salary, they do not have enough for a subdivided flat, which costs HK$3,800 these days. The Society for Community Organisation has urged the government to provide more shelters for the homeless.
