A news stand owner, named Yiu Yau-pik, was convicted on Monday of throwing an egg at Hong Kong lawmaker Leung Kwok-hung (A.K.A. Long Hair) during last year’s pro-democracy protests.
The court heard that Yiu, 45, hurled an egg straight at Leung’s chest, staining the lawmaker’s T-shirt on Oct. 30 last year. Three more eggs were thrown at Leung by unknown people, reports the SCMP.
The magistrate described the incident as a premeditated attack that was a result of a difference in political opinion. Yiu threw the egg after calling Leung a “traitor to the country”.
The news stand owner admitted to the assault, which occurred outside the Legislative Council Complex in Admiralty, and was subsequently sentenced to 120 hours of community service. According to a probation report quoted in court, Yiu was remorseful.
Outside the court, however, he refused to apologise, instead accusing Leung of being an egg-thrower himself.
There’s surely some saying here about how people in glass houses shouldn’t throw eggs…
Leung “divided the people and urged them to join the Occupy protests” leading to the 79 day sit-in which had an adverse effect on Yiu’s business in Wan Chai, the 45-year-old claimed.
