A 51-year-old taxi driver died in the early hours on Monday morning, after he was seriously injured in a car crash in Tai Po.
At approximately 3am, the driver, surnamed Fung, had just dropped off a passenger and was driving along Lam Kam Road towards Yuen Long. Another man was driving in the opposite direction towards Tai Po with his female colleague, according to a police statement.
The taxi and private car crashed into each other in a head-on collision near She Shan Road, causing the front of Fung’s cab to crumple. Fung reportedly sustained heavy injuries to his head and chest, and was rushed to Alice Ho Miu Ling Nethersole Hospital, where he was declared dead at 3:52am. He is survived by his two daughters.
The driver and passenger in the private car, both aged 45, were unconscious and semi-conscious respectively, and were taken to Price of Wales Hospital, where they remain in the intensive care unit.
Apple Daily reported yesterday that a witness on the scene told police officers that Fung had caused the accident by crossing into the opposite lane. However, surveillance footage was released today, which appears to show the private car crossing into Fung’s lane and colliding with his taxi.
Investigations are underway, and anyone who witnessed or has information about the crash is urged to contact police officers from New Territories North by calling 3661 3800.
