Friday, August 16

HKTDC Food Expo

The Public Hall at the Food Expo will feature 600 exhibitors from Mainland China, Canada, Japan, Korea, and Taiwan, with a premium food zone hosting more than 30 renowned brands including Appolo, Kee Wah Bakery, Maxim’s Group, Vita Green, and Wing Wah. Visitors can find discount goods like one dollar mooncakes and one dollar abalones — all on a first-come, first-served basis, of course.

10am to 10pm until Aug 18; 10am to 6pm on Aug 19 at Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre, 1 Harbour Road, Wanchai. HK$25 (general tickets), HK$10 (morning admission ticket & night admission ticket).

International Arts Carnival 2019: The Odyssey of Little Dragon

Presented by the City Contemporary Dance Company, this show will feature dance performances inspired by martial arts legend Bruce Lee, in the newest production directed by the company’s assistant artistic director, Dominic Wong.

BLOOM Festival HK

Organized by a group of hip hop music artists and DJs hoping to “bring hope” to Hong Kongers in this current political climate, this gig will donate all proceeds (excluding costs) to FactWire News Agency and Spark Alliance HK, groups that are helping arrested protesters.

German Film Forum: “Lomo – The Language of Many Others”  

The Goethe-Institut Hong Kong is hosting a screening of Lomo – The Language of Many Others, a 2017 German movie about a disillusioned boy named Karl. He spends most of his free time on his blog, where he collects photographs and videos. But when he falls in love with his classmate Doro, the couple start playing a dangerous game, uploading sensitive videos online and letting Karl’s followers decide on his actions and, eventually, on matters of life and death.

HK Ballet: Peter Pan

Join the Hong Kong Ballet and take a high-flying adventure to Neverland, where you can see Tinkerbell in action with her magical pixie dust, watch Captain Hook being pursued by the hungry crocodile and meet Indian princesses and naughty boys who don’t want to grow up. The renowned ballet company’s choreography combines classical ballet, clever slapstick, and a touch of hip hop in this summer production.

Saturday, August 17

Gin Festival HK

Enjoy the best local and international gins at the Renaissance Harbour View Hotel in Wan Chai, where over 100 gins will be available for tasting. Participants also can join in seminars where brand owners and ambassadors from around the world will be sharing their knowledge on the spirit.

ICHU Terraza – Baywatch Party

Contemporary Peruvian restaurant ICHU is hosting its own ICHU Terraza, where visitors can escape the city and chill on the terrace, inspired by Peru’s mountainous terrain. The Terraza’s party this weekend offers visitors free flow drinks and live music by in-house DJ Hallex M.

3pm at ICHU, 3/F, H Queens, 80 Queens Road, Central. Free.

August Screening: Award-winning Short Films by Local Young Directors

MOVIE11 partners up with FreshWave to showcase award-winning short films from the 12th Fresh Wave International Short Film Festival. The two short films selected are The Bridge and Bright Spring Days, both directed by local young directors.

The Bridge tells the story of young siblings living in Hong Kong who meet up with their family living in the mainland, while Bright Spring Days is about a lounge singer who reunites with her long-lost son, and they relive their past and envision their future together.

3pm, 4pm and 5pm at K11 Piazza, 18 Hanoi Road, Tsim Sha Tsui. Free.

Cantonese Opera Makeup Workshop

Learn how to apply basic Cantonese opera makeup from Cantonese opera performer King Fa-lui and makeup artist Leong Yee-lin. At this workshop, participants will understand how opera performers exaggerate their facial features by using a white powder base and adding a gradient of red or black around the eyes. Pre-booking is required, and you’re advised to wear comfortable clothing and bring makeup remover.

Burger Joys: HK International Burger Eating Competition Vol.3

Bringing the flavors of Los Angeles’ gourmet burger joints to Hong Kong foodies, Burger Joys’ competition this weekend sees ten contestants going head to head to finish one of Hong Kong’s biggest burgers. Even if you’re not prepared to take up the challenge, you can still join in the event and guzzle down free flow San Miguel for HK$99.

Sunday, August 18

Anime Impact! Mind Game

The last screening of the Anime Impact! screening series features Mind Game, which tells the story of Nishi, a loser with dreams of becoming a comic book artist, who embarks on a surreal journey. Viewers will get to witness the limits of animation in this screening as the movie mixes live scenes with 2D and 3D animation.

Sunday Yoga with Maggie 

Kick off your Sunday morning with instructor Maggie who has 13 years of yoga teaching experience. Participants will get to practice gentle yoga with softer, slow-paced, and relaxing movements. Yoga mats will be provided.

9:30am to 10:30am at Lululemon Festival Walk, LG1-25 Festival Walk, 80 Tat Chee Avenue, Kowloon Tong. Free.

OUAT, Hong Kong Comics Touring Exhibition @Hong Kong

This exhibition shows the work of five Hong Kong comics artists and two groups of comics professionals, who are all passionate in building imaginary worlds in their works. Other than reading the comics, visitors can attend public talks and special sessions, as overseas comics artists and comics professionals are invited to host seminars and activities.

10am to 6pm until Sept 3 at Hong Kong Arts Centre, 2 Harbour Road, Wan Chai. Free. 

From Paris to Venice: A photographic journey by Willy Ronis

Organized by Alliance Francaise and the University Museum and Art Gallery, the exhibition displays the work of famous French photographer Willy Ronis, who is famous for capturing “utopian humanistic” moments like men and women on the street in ordinary, everyday activities. His lens also highlights social injustice issues and the underprivileged classes of society. 

9:30am to 6pm on Monday to Saturday; 1pm to 6pm on Sunday, until August 25 at 1/F, T. T. Tsui Building, The University of Hong Kong, 90 Bonham Road, Pokfulam. Free.
