Two moving photo exhibitions for Nepal to catch before the month’s end

Feeling flush, extra generous and starving for a touch of culture having just been paid? Of course you are!

What better way to gently skim two birds with one stone than by going to a photo exhibit where all of the funds will be donated to earthquake relief in Nepal?

There are two that shouldn’t be missed before the end of the month.

The first exhibit will be held at the Pemberton in Sheung Wan on Friday, June 26. “Night for Nepal” will feature the work of award-winning Laotian-Vietnamese humanitarian photographer Lâm Duc Hiên.

Lâm Duc Hiên

Lâm has donated pieces from his extraordinary series “Portraits of Mekong,” a seven-year effort in which he travelled along the Mekong River documenting stories of his own childhood and those of the people living along the route from Vietnam to Tibet.

A big, fat 100 percent of the evening’s proceeds will go to the Nepal Youth Foundation, which runs both short and long-term programmes to rebuild areas of Nepal.

Join the Consul General of Nepal and the Consul General of Vietnam (both confirmed guests) for an evening of charity, art, food, drinks and music.

If you’re unable to make the one-night-only event, another nearby exhibit by Coconuts HK’s very own Associate Editor Laurel Chor, which promises to be a poignant and humbling experience, displaying her moving photos of the scene in Nepal immediately after the earthquake.

Laurel flew to Kathmandu in May to cover the aftermath of the earthquake for Coconuts, and took some powerful photos of the damage she witnessed and the people she met.

“The Aftermath” is on display until Tuesday June 30 at the OpenDoor Café and Platform in Sheung Wan.

All proceeds from donations and sales will go to the grassroots charities Khusi Hona and Himalayas Climate Initiative.

Be sure to do your bit before your burn through your salary in beer and burritos again.
