Street performers in Mong Kok: Entertaining or a nuisance?

Street performers in Mong Kok, although a part of Hong Kong’s unique sub-culture, are driving nearby residents nuts!

During the weekends, Mong Kok’s pedestrian-only zones are filled with performers, political activists, as well as telecommunication promoters. Residents in the area say they are creating unbearable levels of noise and are causing major human traffic along Sai Yeung Choi Street.

A resident says her daughter has a hard time concentrating on her homework, others complain of difficulty sleeping at night. Nearby shop keepers say their business has been affected by the noise, as it’s difficult to sell or explain products to customers.

The Yau Tsim Mong District Council is looking into the possibility of reducing the days in which the street is closed to traffic to minimise the disruption to those staying in the neighbourhood. Currently, the street is closed to vehicles from 4:00pm to 10:00pm from Monday to Saturday and from noon to 10pm on Sundays and public holidays.

Street performers are hoping the show can go on as they have loyal fans and followers and believe it’s a form of freedom of expression.
