Monday, Aug. 10, is Skyscraper Appreciation Day! Lucky for us, we don’t have to look very far to admire the spectacular skyscrapers that surround the heart of Hong Kong.
FYI, Hong Kong has the most skyscrapers in the world, with the count almost doubling that of New York City. Suck it, NYC!
In case you were wondering, Skyscraper Appreciation Day is the birthday of famous architect William Can Alen, the man behind the construction of the Chrysler Building, one of Manhattan’s most iconic landmarks.
It’s a day for the general public to celebrate man’s ability to construct industrial masterpieces and simply appreciate the structural and architectural brilliance of really super tall buildings.
Here are some photos and facts on some of Hong Kong’s most significant and stunning skyscrapers:
The Bank of China Tower’s exterior design is inspired by the art of Feng Shui. The diagonal lines resemble bamboo shoots which are supposed to symbolise livelihood and prosperity.
Two International Finance Centre is the second tallest building in Hong Kong. Its notable tenants include Samsung Electronics and Hong Kong Monetary Authority.
Standing out and brightly lit is the International Commerce Centre, the tallest building in Hong Kong and seventh tallest building in the world.
Central Plaza has a unique triangular floor plan, apparently providing better area utilisation. Believe it or not, it also houses the world’s highest church inside a skyscraper.
The HSBC headquarters are also considered to have good feng shui due to their direct view of the water, which is strongly associated with wealth.
Last but not least is our picturesque Lippo Centre, which looks like koala bears clinging onto a tree!
Skyscraper Appreciation Day: the perfect excuse to upload that skyscraper photo you couldn’t help taking, and show everyone else in the world the beauty that is Hong Kong.
