With news of the Jumbo Floating Restaurant capsizing in the South China Sea on Sunday, we may never get to see it again. As our way of saying goodbye, we present five classic movie and music video scenes that were shot at Jumbo for you to relive your memories of the Hong Kong icon.
Stephen Chow’s The God of Cookery
Perhaps the most memorable of the lot is this scene from the classic comedy The God of Cookery featuring Stephen Chow as the film’s titular character, a celebrity chef, cooking a bowl of “Sorrowful Rice” — a simple dish of barbecue pork rice, on the instantly recognizable restaurant boat.
The judge, played by Nancy Sit, was so touched by his cooking that she teared up.
Andrew Lau and Alan Mak’s Infernal Affairs II
The Hong Kong icon is also featured in crime-action film Infernal Affairs II.
Anthony Wong, who plays a cop, leads his team into the floating restaurant to arrest the boss of a family triad played by Francis Ng.
Guy Hamilton’s The Man with the Golden Gun
Besides Hong Kong movies, the floating restaurant can also be seen in a number of foreign films, including The Man with the Golden Gun.
In the James Bond film, the late actor Roger Moore can be seen gambling on the boat.
Takao Okawara’s Godzilla vs. Destoroyah
The Jumbo Floating Restaurant’s famous neon lights and almost 80-meter long exterior are also featured in Japanese film Godzilla vs Destoroyah.
In the opening scene, Godzilla attacks Hong Kong, including the restaurant boat.
Mirror’s All in One music video (Lunar New Year version)
While the floating restaurant has graced many movie sets, perhaps the last celebrities to film inside the vessel are members of the popular Canto-pop boy band Mirror.
The 12-piece band filmed a Lunar New Year version of their dance hit All in One for Malaysian satellite television provider Astro earlier this year.
In the video, Mirror’s sleek dance moves were juxtaposed with the restaurant’s intricate and lavish decor.
