Street performers: it’s the one area where Hong Kong always lagged behind other global metropolises.
Granted, it’s nice we don’t have creepy silver-painted robots tapping you on the shoulder or hippies banging on bongos on every corner – but they do add a certain unique character to every city.
Markian, our favourite teenage random-online-video maker, went around the city filming the few buskers that walk among us for a video called, “The Sound of Hong Kong”.
(He also included a performance by a troupe of traditional Chinese musicians inside a mall, which probably doesn’t count.)
From bucket-drummers to singer-songwriters, from classical violinists to electronic didgeridooists, our streets seem to be becoming friendlier and friendlier to musicians.
Let’s just hope it lasts and that the Hong Kong government doesn’t try to destroy yet another facet of our living, breathing culture.
