Nation of Nerds: ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron’ breaks records at Hong Kong box office

If you were desperate to spend last weekend in a dark, freezing cold room but found your plans scuppered as you couldn’t get a ticket to the new Avengers movie, that’s because everyone else in the city did.

Hong Kong Box Office reports that the “Avengers: Age of Ultron” set several new records in the city, including:

-Highest-grossing four-day weekend movie at HKD49.6 million

-Biggest opening day on Thursday with HKD9.3 million

-Highest-grossing single day on Saturday with HKD15.5 million

The previous four-day winner was “Transformers: Age of Extinction”, which raked in HKD37.2 million last year, while the single day performance beats previous record holder “Iron Man 3”, which grossed HKD11.6 million in 2013.

We sure do love our nerdy action movies in Honkers.

The film opened in Hong Kong a week ahead of North America, with 80 percent of tickets sold out two weeks in advance.
