2020 has been a bizarre year. Hong Kong is in the midst of a fourth COVID-19 wave, ushering in another round of bar closures and gathering restrictions just as the holidays are around the corner. Way too many mornings begin with news of lawmakers arrested and activists sentenced.
Now more than ever, the work of Spanish artist Joan Cornella—known for his dark, self-deprecative humor—hits home. Quite literally too: The cartoonist is set to hold an exhibition in Hong Kong later this month.

Titled “Contemporary Showcase: My life is pointless by Joan Cornella,” the exhibition will feature life-size panels, sculptures and works exclusive to his Hong Kong display.

Cornella’s art, characterized by simple lines, vibrant color schemes and sharp facial expressions of his characters, has graced exhibitions around the world from Tokyo to New York.
His coming exhibition will be held in two phases—Dec. 15 to Dec. 23 and Jan. 4 to Jan. 29—at Sotheby’s Gallery at Pacific Place. The showcase is presented by Sotheby’s and AllRightsReserved, a local creative studio.
