Here’s some good news for all you film buffs out there. The M+ museum in the West Kowloon Cultural District is opening a sleek cinema showing cross-disciplinary new films and classics on June 8.

Comprising three theaters, with 180 seats, 60 seats and 40 seats respectively, M+ Cinema will showcase a wide range of moving image works, including feature films, documentaries, experimental cinema, video art, restored classics, and newly discovered or rarely seen films.

Designed by world-renowned architecture firm Herzog & de Meuron, the three cinema houses feature seats by Italian furniture maker Poltrona Frau, furnished in fabrics by Danish design company Kvadrat.

Equipped with digital and analogue 16mm and 35mm projection facilities and a Dolby 7.1 sound system, films will be screened as closely as possible to their original formats.

The cinema’s inaugural lineup will feature 70 works including Hong Kong classics and films from around the world.

They include the Hong Kong premieres of the 4K restored versions of Days of Being Wild (1990) by Wong Kar-wai and Xiao Wu (1998) by Jia Zhangke.

Another highlight is the recurrent Makers and Making series, which features documentaries about visual art, design, architecture, film and performance that give audiences behind-the-scenes access to some of the most captivating creative minds of our time.

The first three films in the series offer a biographical sketch of Japanese photographer Daido Moriyama, a moving portrait of Finnish architects Alvar and Aino Aalto, and a portrait of leading American film critic Pauline Kael.

Each documentary will be launched on a Wednesday evening, starting June 15.

Tickets to the cinema will go on sale starting Friday.

M+ patrons, affiliates and members can enjoy a members’ priority booking period with discounts from Tuesday to Thursday.
