Hong Kong university evokes Occupy memories with two-week Umbrella Festival

A group of students and lecturers from CUHK are busy keeping the Umbrella Movement alive, not in that scrappy gaggle of tents down in Admiralty, but in a multidisciplinary event space.

The Umbrella Festival opened at the Jockey Club’s Art Centre in Shek Kip Mei on Sunday, featuring a diverse selection photo exhibitions, film screenings, dance and drama performances until May 31.

Although not all submissions are directly related to last year’s pro-democracy protests, each is meant to embody issues of identity, belonging and collective dreams.

Highlights of the two-week programme include:

“Blossoms Everywhere” (throughout the festival), photographs from frontline journalists, personal photo diaries and artworks from students, and a replica Lennon Wall.

“Our Golden Era” (2pm, Monday May 25) a screening of five documentary films about last year’s protests.

“A Shaggy Dog Story” (7pm, Monday May 25) a stand-up routine about police dogs by Chinese University lecturer Chan Ka-ming.

“The Immigration Lottery” (8pm, Saturday May 30), an English language play that premiered at last year’s Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

Don’t forget your umbrella!
