Hong Kong reporter slammed for asking Emma Stone ‘super rude’ question at the Oscars

Not that you need a reminder from us, but the Oscars happened earlier this week (it was Monday lunchtime for us, so yeah, this week). Following that whole Moonlight/La La Land/Miss Universe debacle, another (much, much less significant) snafu managed to briefly slip under our radar… that of the Hong Kong reporter who was “super rude” to La La Land actress Emma Stone.

After Stone’s Best Actress win (congrats Emma, lol just kidding she’s not reading this), she did the customary Q&A in the Oscars press room, where reporters asked her some predictably softball questions (“how will you celebrate?”) and tried to suss out how exactly the Best Picture accident happened (the accountants). Hong Kong reporter Tammy from Apple Daily, however, set herself apart from the crowd in perhaps the worst way possible when she referred to an unsubstantiated rumour, asking, “Do you feel like owing Emma Watson a drink or dinner to thank her for turning down the role [in La La Land]?” See the awkward AF moment for yourself (6:10 mark):

Despite her apparent shock, Stone handled it with grace, answering, “Oh my god, you know what? She’s doing great. She’s… the coolest. She’s Belle. Right? I mean, I think it’s all… it’s all good. I think she’s amazing.” Having said that, many local media outlets have pointed out Stone’s “furrowed brow” as a sign that she was offended by the question.

Judging by comments online, it seems that netizens are plenty peeved on Stone’s behalf, with tweets like this:

And Youtube comments like “so fucking rude”, “The journalist not only made herself sound dumb but took her whole company down. Ban them from future events.”, and “stupid reporter. stupid question…. lovely reply.”

Between this and the police’s Nazi Germany comment, Hong Kong’s making international news for all the wrong reasons. Sigh. Thank goodness we have Wong Kar-wai.
