Hong Kong bids farewell to Fenwick Pier after 69 years

Hongkongers have flocked to the Fenwick Pier before it closes this Friday after 69 years.

Built along the coastline of Wan Chai, the pier was the port of call for tens of thousands of foreign sailors in its heyday.

The Fleet Arcade, a four-storey shopping centre, opened in 1994, offering marines and sailors to a place to shop, eat and relax.

But like many historic sites located on prime land along the city’s famed Victoria Harbour, the pier and the arcade are suffering the fate of demolition as the government takes back the land for redevelopment.
