Hong Kong’s TV scene is back in the international spotlight with actors Gigi Leung, Ling Man-lung and Sham Ka-ki, and writer Benny Lau earning nominations at the Busan International Film Festival’s Asia Contents Awards.
Leung and Lau have been nominated for best actress and best writer, respectively, for “The Parents League”, which is produced by MakerVille.
The TV series, which was shown on ViuTV, tells the story of Nora (played by Leung) quitting her job as a journalist to be a full-time mother to her daughter who is struggling in Hong Kong’s pressure cooker education system. Together with other parents, Nora learns to be a good mother and raise her daughter in a happy learning environment.
Ling and Sham have been nominated for best newcomer (actor) and best supporting actor, respectively, for “In Geek We Trust”, which is also produced by MakerVille and aired on ViuTV.
The TV drama tells the story of Shun (played by Ling) who, after losing his job as the head of the IT department of a bank, sets up a mobile payment start-up at Born Hub, a co-working space run by failed entrepreneur Kenneth (played by Sham). Together with like-minded but socially awkward geeks as his colleagues, Shun experiences ups and downs as he launches his dream app.
The winners of the awards will be decided by the Asia Contents Awards Academy, which consists of a group of previous hosts and winners of the awards and professionals in the entertainment industry.
The awards will be held on-site for the first time in three years on Oct. 8, but those of us in Hong Kong can catch it online via the film festival’s official YouTube channel from 3:30pm.
