Get your fill of alt creds at Hidden Agenda’s ‘synth + vox’ event this Sunday

Can we all agree that deep house/chillwave/lounge music has had its moment? Sure, we all felt pretty cool for a minute there, smugly sending each other links from Majestic and Eton Messy like we didn’t first click on their videos because of the provocative thumbnails.

But electronica is more multifaceted than whatever Bicep is doing nowadays (no offence Bicep, big fan), and it’s time to pay less attention to the Croatian festival lineups, and give a little love to our homegrown electro talent. Cue “synth + vox”, an event at our beloved Hidden Agenda featuring “vocal-driven electronic bands”, along with IDM (that’s Intelligent Dance Music to us plebs).

If you’re not sure what vocal-driven electronic bands would sound like, think less-grandiose Imogen Heap. Or listen to this song that we have very helpfully embedded for you.

The bands playing at synth + vox are Frontyr, an “indietronica” three piece band (formerly folk pop duet One Talent); Deer, a band seemingly named after the twee-est of animals; and guests Dark on Tuesdays, a downtempo Norwegian outfit.

There will also be a live electronic show from Zebra Kills Horse, an “experimental live music project” by painter Paul Turner, and a DJ set from The Groove Thief, who the SCMP called “one of Hong Kong’s leading arbiters of musical taste”. We won’t take it personally, SCMP.

The organisers promise that it will be a night of “bone-chilling, mind-blowing music”, which honestly sounds very on theme for October. If that also sounds like your bag, head to Hidden Agenda to get into the Halloween spirit.

What: synth + vox
When: 8pm-midnight Sunday Oct. 25
Where: Hidden Agenda, 2A, Winful Industrial Building, 15-17 Tai Yip Street, Kwun Tong
