English-speaking Hongkongers confused about British etiquette in “Downton Abbey” or the American political system in “House of Cards” are finally going to be getting a show set in our very own home.
American mass media corporation 21st Century Fox has announced that they’re planning on producing multiple English-language mini-series in Hong Kong, reports the SCMP.
Local acting and production talent will be used to create the planned one or two mini-series every year, with the Asian and international markets in mind.
Fox plans on sinking USD1 million (HKD7.76 million) into each episode, with the first two six-to-eight-episode series going into production sometime this year.
For comparison, “Game of Thrones” costs on average USD6 million (HKD46.5 million) per episode, while “Orange Is The New Black” takes a little under USD4 million (HKD31 million) per episode.
“We plan to produce premium mini-series; high-concept television made by film talents from here,” Cora Yim, senior vice-president of Fox International Channels, told the SCMP.
“Many film directors in Hollywood are producing television but this has yet become a trend in Asia. We want to bring US standards to Asia.”
The first series will be called “Guilty As Sin”, which will tell a local story in Hong Kong.
The second will be in English and be set across Asia.
Hong Kong – once a regional television powerhouse – is ready to make its comeback!
