Exit the Ninja: Die Antwoord pulls out of Clockenflap due to ‘unforeseen circumstances’

South African rap-rave group Die Antwoord has cancelled their upcoming performance at Clockenflap next month due to “unforeseen circumstances”, organisers said.

Die Antwoord rose to fame in 2008 with their viral music video, “Enter the Ninja“. In the years since, they’ve made a name for themselves as a subversive act, unabashedly delighting in their own maximalism and shock value (see: Fatty Boom Boom).

Hong Kong fans may still get to catch the Yo-Landi and Ninja in action, as Clockenflap organisers said on Facebook that the band apologised for the cancellation and hope to “perform for their fans in Hong Kong soon”.

Commenters were understandably disappointed, with some hopefully suggesting replacement acts (we’re personally gunning for Christopher Owens), or rather dramatically announcing that they would no longer attend the festival. One person even brusquely said, “Fuck you!” as if organisers want prominent acts to quit with a month’s notice (generally, they don’t).

This is the second blow for Clockenflap, after headlining act LCD Soundsystem cancelled their appearance in August. The indie heavyweights scrapped their entire Asian tour in favour of recording a new album, which we guess is pretty good, as excuses go.

But there’s still hope: the full lineup and schedule for Clockenflap 2016 is dropping sometime tomorrow, and we’ve got our fingers crossed for some juicy new additions.

Let’s just hope Foals doesn’t up and quit in the next month…
