Lawmaker and wildlife group launch photo exhibition highlighting Hong Kong’s role in the illegal trade of African wildlife

A photography exhibition highlighting the illegal ivory trade, which is largely fuelled by Asian demand, will be hosted at four different shopping malls in the New Territories this month.

The exhibition is being put on by wildilfe conservation group WildAid, together with Hong Kong lawmaker Elizabeth Quat, with the aim of “reconnect[ing] the Hong Kong public back with nature and show[ing] how the Hong Kong ivory trade has been proven beyond doubt to have direct links to elephant and rhino poaching in Africa”.

Running through June, the “Africa’s Wildlife and Hong Kong Ivory Trade” series was launched on June 7 in Sha Tin, and showcases photographs taken in Kenya and Tanzania by Quat, WildAid campaigner Alex Hofford, Australian photographer Shannon Benson and Hongkonger Henry Yip.

The exhibits also invite passersby to write quick messages in support of the government’s promise to ban the ivory trade, which will be sent to the Environment Bureau.

In January, Chief Executive CY Leung pledged to ban the ivory trade into the city during his annual policy address.
