Exhibition documents Hong Kong through the eyes of colonial-era travelers

This one’s for the history buffs (or the desperately nostalgic).

Local art gallery Picture This has curated an exhibition featuring travel-related advertisements and memorabilia from Asia dating back from 1910 to the 1960s.

“Traveling Through Asia” brings together posters, luggage labels, and maps from destinations including Hong Kong, Singapore, China, Vietnam, Australia, and a dozen other countries.

In the Hong Kong collection, throwbacks include a 1930’s advertisement for the “Repulse Bay Hotel” (looking deceptively like Hawaii) and a 1960’s Cathay Pacific luggage label with the airline’s mission of “spanning the orient every day of the year.” We’re guessing that was before strikes were a possibility.

If you like what you see and happen to have deep pockets, you can even buy the items on exhibit.

Our living room could use a vintage map of Indochina on the wall…

If you can’t make it to the opening reception on June 9, you can still visit the exhibition anytime until June 27 or check out the collection online.
