The evolution of the MTR from 1980 to 1998 in one picture

Things change: rickshaws were actual rickshaws – not a cheesy tourist bus – and there used to be so few MTR lines that they didn’t have to confuse everyone and assign them different shades of the same colour (we’re looking at you, Tseung Kwan O, Disneyland, and West Rail lines).

In one simple picture posted to Reddit, you can see how quickly Hong Kong has evolved: pictures of the MTR lines from 1980 to 1998 are stacked on top of each other, showing how the system has grown over time.

We now have nine MTR lines, which carry 2.3 million passengers a day.  Anyone remember the days before Octopus cards and trilingual announcements?
