Diamond-encrusted Hermès handbag breaks record, sells for HKD1.72m at Hong Kong auction

A Hermès bag broke the record for the most expensive handbag ever sold at a Christie’s auction in Hong Kong yesterday, fetching a whopping HKD1.72 million.

The Birkin bag was sold to an anonymous telephone bidder, because, naturally, buying a million dollar bag is something you do over the phone.

Sure, the bag is encrusted with 18k white gold and “diamond features” and made of pink-dyed crocodile skin, but when the hell would you ever bring it out?

Unimpressively, it isn’t even the most expensive bag ever made. That accolade actually goes to another Hermès bag which has never been sold but is valued at HKD3.35 million.

Looking to beat yesterday’s record? Christie’s is putting a black version of the pink bag up for auction today, so get your phone out and start bidding!
