Now in its fifth edition, the Hong Kong International Poster Triennial (which means it comes every three years, FYI) is taking place at the Hong Kong Heritage Museum until Mar. 2. More than 200 bright and brilliant posters from countries all around the world have been handpicked by an expert pannel of judges to represent this year’s suitable catch-all theme, “Vision”.

Tribute to a Late Great

The Hong Kong Film Archive will be celebrating the life and work of late Hong Kong cinema great Run Run Shaw with a series of screenings, seminars, talks and exhibitions. See more than 30 Shaw Brothers’ films from the 1950s to the 1970s throughout the month, complemented by expert-led seminars on Jan. 10 and 24. An exhibition featuring family photos, letters and early handbills will continue until April 5.

Flower Power

Get to know “The Four Gentlemen”, AKA plum blossom, bamboo, chrysanthemums and orchids, at the Chinese Fine Art Gallery of the Hong Kong Museum of Art this month. The exhibition sees the four staples of Chinese calligraphy and painting employed by a selection of the greats from the museum’s collection, including Xu Wei of the Ming dynasty, Zheng Xie of the Qing dynasty, and Wu Changshuo and Zhang Daqian of the modern period.

Shrewd Woman

Winner of three accolades at the Buxton Fringe Awards and hot off a transatlantic tour, Shrew is a one-woman provocative take on Shakespeare’s Taming of the Shrew. Meet a women, a tragic figure stuck in a comedy, who shows us what it means to be trapped in an underwhelming destiny. The show promises to be equally funny, sad and repulsive.

 Classic Notes

Experience 24-year-old former boy-genius Behzod Abduraimov take on one of the most challenging piano works of all time, Rachmaninov’s epic Piano Concerto No. 3 under the baton of Thomas Dausgaard. Described by the Daily Telegraph as a “gift from God”, the exciting new talent marks the first Hong Kong Philharmonic concert of 2015. The concert will also feature Mendelssohn’s The Hebrides and Elgar’s Enigma Variations.

Blasts from the Past

Back by popular demand after selling out for all showings from August to January, “Restored Treasures – First World War Centenary”, presented by the Hong Kong Film Archive, will be gracing us with two additional screenings on Jan. 18 and 25. See Stanley Kubrick’s famously scathing “Paths of Glory” (1957) and Lewis Milestone’s Oscar-winner “All Quiet on the Western Front” (1930) restored and retouched to perfection at the HKFA Cinema.

Contemporaries Cubed

Fabrik Gallery brings Hong Kong a taste of four of China’s most interesting contemporary artists. See Shanghai-based Yu Nancheng’s stunning paintings using traditional “China Red” oil paint and a palette knife; Dong Jian’s abstract “Lost Landscapes”; Zhanwei’s painted series “Glow”, inspired by the orphans of Gansu Province; and Li Yueling’s vibrant images of children from his Beijing studio.

Making It Up

Experience a completely unique show, never to be seen again as the ImprovAsia gang returns to Hong Kong. See this comical and sometimes cryptic bunch concoct scenes on the spot using suggestions from the audience. Things can get lewd and rude, so no under 18s allowed.
