As everyone knows, a black-and-white flash mob of adorableness has overtaken Hong Kong the past couple weeks, with 1,600 papier-mâché panda sculptures popping up around the city. But today the pandas are settling in for a temporary exhibition at the new arts hub PMQ in Central.
Billy Clarke took a first-hand look at these black-and-white beasts (and their adoring crowds) and interviewed their creator, French artist Paulo Grangeon, for Coconuts TV.
This panda craze is more than just a cute, creative way to brighten up Hong Kong this summer. It’s also about wildlife conservatation and was organized by the World Wildlife Fund. The 1,600 panda sculptures represent the dwindling number of pandas living in the wild – with one papier-mâché panda for every real one.
