We all have that one hipster friend who claims to listen to “all types of music.” Or maybe that’s you.
Whatever the case, you’ll be missing out if you don’t catch the debut show of a brand new music series from Soundbox at Hong Kong KITEC next Tuesday.
The lineup features musicians spanning all across the spectrum, from the Billboard-topping alternative rap/rock group Twenty One Pilots, to Japanese “samurai guitarist” Miyavi, and the simply electric local rock band KillerSoap.
A genre-mixing duo hailing from America, Twenty One Pilots may very well join Eminem on the ever-so-short list of white guys who can rap. Their mix of piano, synths, techno beats and lyrics is truly one of a kind, propelling them to recent-found fame in the US of A.
Japanese rock star Miyavi may be better known to moviegoers as the strange, sadistic prison guard in Angelia Jolie’s recent WWII film “Unbroken”, but his musical style is just as eccentric as the character he portrayed. A bestselling pop/blues/rock god who’s toured the world not once, but FOUR times, Miyavi’s unorthodox guitar-slapping style is definitely something to behold.
Finally, representing the 852 is rock group KillerSoap, whose music is said to be inspired by both British and Chinese influences. They’re known to belt out fast, catchy melodies then switch gears into moody ballads. Winners of the China Global Battle of the Bands, this group will surely continue to top the local rock scene for years to come.
Soundbox is promising to bring the latest cutting-edge music to Asia by hosting live performances from hip bands from across the world. And with this inaugural lineup, we’re convinced that they’ll deliver.
If you’re still unconvinced, let your ears do the deciding with Twenty One Pilots’ synth-infused spoken word track “Car Radio” (just wait for the climax):
