Brick by Brick: Hong Kong start-up helps turn your favourite photos into Lego-like mosaics

If you fancy yourself as an artist but there’s only one problem – a distinct lack of talent – painting by numbers was pretty much your only option for a creative outlet that wouldn’t end up looking like crap… until now!

When we stumbled across Hong Kong start-up Brick-a-Project recently at a craft fair, we were struck by how this kooky concept bridges the gap between artistic, practical and social activities, with the resulting product being something awesome you can hang on your wall.

Set up by Hong Kong fashion graduate Carmen Lee last summer, Brick-a-Project calls for Hongkongers to turn their most treasured photos into coloured brick mosaics, with the pieces very similar to, but actually not, Lego.

Be honest now, who doesn’t wish they could still play with Lego(-like stuff) without the cover of a nearby child?

“Nowadays, people are always on their mobile phones day and night. I wanted to create an activity that people can start from zero, and work step by step to finish a memorable product,” Lee told Coconuts HK.

“During the process, people can enjoy this ‘low tech’, hands-on experience with their family and friends, and regain the enjoyment in building physical item and face-to-face interaction.”

The process is pretty simple:

– Email the team 1-3 photos you’d like to recreate in the medium of Lego (higher resolution photos in sunlight with high contrast work the best).

– Specify the size of mosaic you want (from 40cm x 40cm to 80cm x 80cm).

– Submit your payment (from HKD450 to HKD1,600, depending on size).

– Wait for you box set to arrive.

– Get cracking!

And if you love this idea but you’re totally super lazy, Lee can also assemble your piece herself and deliver it to you ready-made. There’s also custom designs for those with no inspiration.

For the record though, we think that’s cheating!
