5 ways to celebrate Cinco de Mayo in Hong Kong!

One of the benefits of living in “Asia’s culinary capital” is that Hong Kong’s restaurants are never shy of celebrating international festivals.

One such festival that’s coming up is the Cinco de Mayo, when Mexico won a historical battle against the French in the state of Puebla.

In Mexico, Cinco de Mayo is celebrated mostly in Puebla. However, the day has taken on a life of its own in parts of the US with large Mexican-American populations, with people from all walks of life taking part in parades and parties, listening to traditional Mexican music and – naturally – eating as much Mexican food as possible.

Here are five places you might want to check out on May 5 for a little taste of Mexico in Hong Kong:

1. Lily & Bloom and Little Burro

Lily & Bloom and Little Burro are teaming up for the night to give you live music and delicious food.

Chef Billy Otis is serving up an extensive menu of Mexican specials at Lily including uni and scallop ceviche (HKD195) and line-caught mahi mahi with corn tortillas (HKD245), while Little Burro will be hosting a pop-up stand at Bloom, where hungry Coconauts can grab carnitas, fish tacos, and fajito veggie tacos.

It’s free entry but sadly not free tacos.

When: 6pm-late, Thursday 5 May, 2016
Where: 5/F-6/F, LKF Tower, 33 Wyndham Street, Central.

2. Brickhouse

Errm, yes please.

We already know Brickhouse has a pretty good reputation when it comes to Mexican food. Hidden down a dark alley in LKF, this place is always bustling with good vibes and even better food.

Check out some of Brickhouse’s new dishes, like the Prawn Star 2.0 taco with lime garlic cabbage, chilli flake spiced shrimp, mango salsa, cilantro and onions, or simply take out some of your work-fuelled rage on their Cinco de Mayo piñatas.

In addition, there will be a fancy dress competition, the grand prize of which is HKD2,000 credit to spend at the restaurant. Not too shabby.

When: 7pm-late, Thursday May 5, 2016
Where: G/F, 20A D’Aguilar Street, Lan Kwai Fong, Central

3. Chino

Kennedy Town’s modern Mexican restaurant Chino has something big planned for the 5/5. Their chef will be creating a special menu for one night only for anybody and everybody to enjoy, with regular tacos, taquitos, and sandwiches.

For the revellers looking to take things up a notch, all sorts of boozy delights from micheladas (a beer-based cocktail), the obligatory margaritas and a wide range of tequilas and mescals will be on offer.

When: 6pm-late, Thursday May 5, 2016
Where: 1B-1C New Praya, Kennedy Town

4. Agave Tequila Y Comida

If you like tequila then you’ll probably already be aware of the extensive collection offered at Agave, which sounds more than fitting for a Mexican celebration to us. Grab two Coronas for the price of one from 5pm-midnight. We wouldn’t want to be you on May 6.

When: 5pm-late, Thursday 5 May, 2016
Where: G/F, 9 Lan Kwai Fong, Central

5. Cali-Mex

Beer and burritos from Cali-Mex

If you walk through the streets of Hong Kong then it’s pretty hard to miss a Cali-Mex. They’re almost as ubiquitous as a 7-Eleven which is great news for the burrito addicts out there, but bad news for those who are trying to get ripped for #JunkSeason.

For Cinco de Mayo, this popular chain is going to give you a free beer with every burrito that you buy. Free and beer are definitely two words we like to hear in the same sentence. How many beers and burritos is too many beers and burritos?

When: All day, Thursday May 5, 2016
Where: All Cali-Mex outlets
