42 Hong Kong museums and cultural institutions are open for free this weekend!

Thanks to International Museum Day, 42 museums and cultural venues will be letting in people in this Saturday and Sunday for exactly zero dollars.

Participating institutions include the fantastic Museum of History, the hit-or-miss Museum of Art, the often-overlooked Heritage Museum, the could-be-way-cooler Science Museum, and the oddly retro Space Museum.

(The Space Museum and the Art Museum are actually closed for renovation, but they’ll be holding special programmes and activities.)

We know the only thing that’s been keeping you from enriching your historical and cultural knowledge in your spare time was the HKD10 entrance fee, so now you have no excuse!

You get to check out special exhibitions like the Science Museum’s “Collider: Step inside the World’s Greatest Experiment” and the Museum of Coastal Defence’s “Braving the Storm: Hong Kong under Japanese Occupation”.

You could also use the opportunity to go on a tour of Hong Kong’s most obscure museums, like the Hong Kong Railway Museum in Tai Po (an open-air museum that’s in the century-old former site of the Tai Po Railway Station) or the Fireboat Alexander Grantham Exhibition Gallery in Quarry Bay (a floating exhibit about marine rescue work).

Before you get too excited, however, keep in mind that you’ll still have to pay to see the Monet exhibit at the Heritage Museum, the shows at the Space Museum’s Space Theatre, and screenings at the Film Archive.

The Hong Kong government has been celebrating the annual International Museum Day, designated by the International Council of Museums, since 2001.
