The Pawn, known for its location at a historic building at the heart of Wan Chai, will close this month and re-open as a contemporary Chinese restaurant.

“An end of an era means the beginning of something new… we’ve decided to return to our roots and will be taking a hiatus starting September 13 to transform everything,” the restaurant wrote on Facebook last week.

The European-style bar and restaurant occupies the former Woo Cheong Pawn Shop, which was built as early as 1888. The shop, part of a cluster of tenement buildings, was revitalized by the Urban Renewal Authority in 2007. The Pawn was among the businesses that moved into the site the following year.

In 2014, the three-story restaurant underwent major renovations and reopened with an all-new interior and menu.

To close the restaurant’s chapter, The Pawn is offering a special four-course tasting menu before bidding a temporary goodbye.
