Turkey Time: 5 fuss-free Thanksgiving dinners to be grateful for

Despite being relative novices when it comes to Thanksgiving, we like to think we’ve learned a few things about it over the years through special episodes of our favourite sitcoms (which always air too early or too late).

Cultural iffiness aside, we know it’s all about turkey, potatoes, cranberry sauce, and some weirdly disappointing marshmallow confection. However, another thing we do know from years of Friends repeats is that throwing all that together is no mean feat. (Read: it is a major fucking hassle.)

So this year, give thanks to Hong Kong’s ridiculous eating-out culture, which means our coddled asses can put in literally zero effort and still sit down to an expertly prepared feast come Thursday. Behold, our top five choices for a fuss-free Thanksgiving meal:

Blue · Butcher and Meat Specialist

Despite the relaunch and sort of new name, the new incarnation of Blue Butcher is still all about the meat, so there’s no need to worry about chowing down on a stringy, dry bird at this Thanksgiving. The star of their festive feast is a beautifully juicy free range turkey from Hunter Valley in Australia, served with mashed potatoes, homemade pork stuffing, chorizo Brussels sprouts, gravy, and the requisite cranberry sauce.

If you fancy having your Thanksgiving dinner at home and pretending to pass off the chef’s commendable work as your own, you can pre-order a whole (HKD1,880) or half turkey (HKD980), which will come with all the trimmings mentioned above, and a sweet potato pie with cinnamon whipped cream.

Where: 1/F, 108 Hollywood Road, Sheung Wan (Google Maps)
Availability: Dine in and delivery, Thursday, Nov. 24 to Friday, Dec. 30
How to order: Email info@bluebutcher.com for pick-up, or arrange for a delivery via Deliveroo

Lily & Bloom

This Turkey Day, Lily & Bloom’s offering a frankly intimidating amount of food with the “Thanksgiving Family Feast” (HKD2,200). The main event’s a whole organic American turkey, sourced by premium food distributor Waves Pacific, which will be served with giblet gravy, fresh cranberry sauce, sausage and sage stuffing, bacon Brussels sprouts, truffle mashed potatoes, creamed spinach, mashed sweet potato, and a homemade pumpkin pie.

It’s supposedly meant to feed five or six people, which is an estimation we assume was calculated in American portions.

Alternatives include a bone-in honey glazed ham (HKD1,250) or a half (HKD1,500) or whole (HKD2,750) roasted USDA tenderloin, while a festive-sounding spiced pecan pie (HKD325) and classic American pie (HKD285) are available for those who prefer their squashes savoury.

Smaller parties can opt for a more manageable three-course Thanksgiving set menu (HKD650) featuring mouthwatering dishes like roasted parsnip soup, turkey roulade, and apple crumble. For those who aren’t hugely partial to turkey but still want to join in the Thanksgiving merriment, there’s the option of slow-cooked wagyu or porcini raviolo for mains, which sounds pretty damn delightful.

Availability: Dine in and delivery, Monday, Nov. 21 to Saturday, Nov. 26

Stone Nullah Tavern

While we’re still salty about the demise of Stone Nullah’s Beat the Clock happy hour, we can’t stay too mad at Chef Vinny Lauria after checking out what he’s offering this Thanksgiving.

For HKD548 a head, diners can indulge in a raw seafood platter, choose to have their turkey either roasted in garlic butter or fried Southern-style, snack on pulled pork rib mac and cheese, and fill their bellies with skillet smores. And yes, there is the option of free-flow booze (HKD198 for wine, HKD308 for champagne, craft beer, and premium wines and spirits).

Those who want the best of both worlds (i.e. Lauria’s cooking in the comfort of their homes) can order a full turkey dinner for four to six people at HKD3,000, or the rather tongue-in-cheek “TV Dinner for One” at HKD350.

Where: G/F, 69 Stone Nullah Lane, Wan Chai (Google Maps)
Availability: Dine in and delivery, Monday, Nov. 21 to Sunday, Nov. 27

The Parish

Despite only being on the Hong Kong F&B scene for a few months, The Parish has already established itself as a solid choice for homey Southern comfort food.

And, by the looks of the set dinner menu (HKD394), the good parishoners are absolutely not fucking around for their debut Thanksgiving: there’s fire-roasted parsnip soup, a tummy-growl-inducing Cajun spiced deep fried turkey served with spiked sweet potato puree, stuffing, veggies and gravy, and either a spiced pumpkin pie or a homemade apple pie for dessert. Hoo boy.

Common Room

If you want to gobble gobble your heart out but don’t feel like flashing too much cash, Common Room’s got the answer. This Thursay, the Wo On Lane gastrobar’s serving up turkey roulade with a foie gras and wild mushroom stuffing, mashed sweet potatoes, marshmallow pumpkin pie and more Thanksgiving goodies at a very reasonable total of HKD168 per head.
