You might think your childhood is long gone, but there’s no shame in embracing your inner five-year-old with a good story every now and then. It’s time to settle down with a glass of warm milk in hand (that’s not to say beer or wine won’t suffice) as the StoryWorthyWeek starts another chapter in Hong Kong.
Now in its second year, the event will run in various locations around the city, and will see all aspects of storytelling – from fables to recounts of life events – take place from Sept. 12 – Sept. 24. Performances by professional actors, workshops and masterclasses will also be hosted by Hong Kong’s David Young and Chicago’s favourite bard, Scott Whitehair.

The festival’s highlight will be a talk by storytelling extraordinaire David Sedaris, with readings from his newest book, ‘Let’s Explore Diabetes with Owls’. Famed for his sardonic comments and dry-humoured critiques about social norms, Sedaris will no doubt treat the audience to golden lines like, “In my day, our parents put us to bed with two simple words: ‘Shut up.’” and, “If cooking is an art, I think we’re in our Dada phase”.
Tom Tiding, director of the festival, says, “We are thrilled to launch StoryWorthyWeek 2014 with a fantastic mix of local and international talent, ready to bring the magic of storytelling alive with 12 days of tales.”
We hope this rather sedate sounding festival takes Hongkongers back to their salad days but away from memories of nap time.
