“In the regular world, Halloween is when children dress up in costumes and beg for candy. In Girl World, Halloween is the one night a year when a girl can dress like a total slut and no other girls can say anything about it.”
Although funny and possibly largely true, North Shore High’s Cady Heron’s take on Halloween is rather misguided. To prevent you blindly following her “slut rule” or staying home in a candy coma after scoffing all the treats meant for the eager-beaver trick-or-treaters, we thought we’d better give you some options. Enter our guide to Hong Kong’s top five Halloweeny haunts of 2014.
Ocean Park Halloween Fest 2014
It’s Hong Kong’s best and most popular Halloween destination, and for all the right reasons. Known for going completely crazy every season, Ocean Park will be filled with ghouls, ghosts, villains (CY Leung?) and more, sure to get you jumping out of your skin. This year, Halloween Fest has kicked it up a notch with its scariest haunted house to date. Don’t worry though, you won’t be screaming for mommy alone.
When: All through October
Where: Ocean Park, 180 Wong Chuk Hang, Aberdeen
$$$: Regular – Adult HKD320 / Child HKD160, Halloween Fest – Adult HKD628 / Child HKD314. Tickets available here
All the way from Las Vegas and debuting in Asia for the first time ever, Fright Dome Hong Kong is bound to get the goosebumps going. With Leatherface from Texas Chainsaw Massacre making an appearance (we’re told with a working chainsaw WTF?), high-tech haunted houses and a Bury-Me-Alive simulator (!!), Fright Dome will curdle your blood as much as the sight of Carrie Lam.
When: Sept. 26 – Nov. 2, 2-10pm
Where: 4/F, The Peak Galleria, 118 Peak Road, The Peak
$$$: Starting from HKD199. Tickets available here
Hongkongers don’t normally need an excuse to go out and party in LKF, but all the same, Halloween is perhaps this hive of hedonism’s biggest night of the year. Expect a massive blur of colours of costumes, accompanied by copious amounts of alcohol for that signature night of spooky drunken fun. There’s nothing really specific about it – just head on down for a whole lot of festive amusement and epic bar/toilet queues.
When: Oct. 31
Where: Lan Kwai Fong
$$$: Free!
If you’re feeling blood thirsty, The Butcher’s Club Halloween Steak Rebellion will be right up your Jack the Ripper-style alley. Going with a Sweeny Todd meets Quentin Tarantino sort of theme, the event will see staff dressed as grisly characters slicing and serving a five-course aged-beef dinner with a complementary bottle of wine per person. Whoop! Swing by in costume for a hoot and a haunting!
When: Oct. 31, from 7:30pm onwards
Where: Editus Rooftop, 17/F, Shui Ki Industrial Building, 18 Wong Chuk Hang Road, Aberdeen
$$$: HKD1,250. Tickets available here
If you’ve got those post-summertime boating blues, Breakaway Hong Kong will have you covered with its Halloween themed luxury yachting trip. Celebrate this annual extravaganza on the seven seas–well, just the South China Sea, actually–with Ghost Meringues, Spooky Boo Brownies and (the bit we know you’re all concerned about) free-flow drinks throughout the night. Costumes, drinks, and some on-board debauchery – what’s not to love?
