Drink Local: A guide to some of the best bars that are delivering right now

Happy Easter, folks. For most, Good Friday probably isn’t quite living up to its name this year. While you may be chafing at the idea of having to stay in on a Friday evening – and on a public holiday, no less – we all know that this is for the best. Thankfully, some of Hong Kong’s best bars are now offering delivery and pickup services, so you can recreate the experience of a Hong Kong night out with expertly made Negronis and hoppy craft beers from the comfort of your own home.

Hey, if you really want to make it feel like you’re on a regular night out, you can even make a surprise call to a work acquaintance you kind of forgot about and make empty promises about “getting coffee sometime”.

This list will be updated with the latest information, so let us know if you have any more suggestions – especially for bars that are further afield – we’d love to hear them!

99 Bottles

Peel Street’s favorite bottle shop and craft beer bar is now delivering! You can either order à la carte or choose from their curated beer sets, which helpfully combine their best-sellers in various categories, like IPAs and pale ales, lagers and pilsners or local brews. No-frills mixer sets are also available, or you can stock up for future dinner parties with the mix and match wine sets. They’re taking orders from 5-8pm, Monday to Sunday.

Bar Buonasera

For a good evening, call Bar Buonasera. (Sorry, it was right there.) While they’re normally all about the fresh ingredients and bespoke cocktails, Buonasera’s husband-and-wife team has whittled down their menu to a few batch-friendly classics. They’re offering three classic cocktails (Manhattans, Old Fashioneds, and Nickgoronis) for pickup only, but you can visit their online shop to get some whiskey delivered to your home. Check out this post for more information.

Momentai

Not on Hong Kong Island? No problem. Laidback waterfront bar and restaurant Momentai is delivering food and bevvies all across Sai Kung, with up to 40 percent off their dine-in price. If you haven’t been (which is an oversight you should rectify once our social lives resume), expect a massive range from crowd favorites to craft beers and ciders, hard seltzers, and plenty of wine. If you don’t live in Sai Kung but fancy an order, just shoot the MMT guys a message on Facebook and they’ll do their best to accommodate you. As a token of their appreciation, they might even chuck in a couple of freebies.

Taqueria Super Macho

Okay, this one technically isn’t a bar — but they do have a very thoughtful happy hour package. Black Sheep’s neighbourhood taco spot is offering “La Casa Loca” packages for people who want to hold virtual happy hours from home. For HKD198 a head, you can get two margarita kits including margarita mix, lime, and garnishes and a portion of tortilla chips, Pico de Gallo, and guacamole. If you plan on getting turnt on your sofa, you can add another margarita kit for HKD68. Orders will be delivered between 3:30pm and 6pm daily.

Tell Camellia

For the days when you can’t choose between tea and booze, just hit up Tell Camellia and they’ll sort you out. They’re offering four pre-batched cocktails, which come in 200ml bottles for HKD250 each. For something smooth and ready-to-drink, go for the Darjeeling Negroni or Matcha Martini. If you fancy something a little stronger, try a bottle of the Matcha Vodka or Mango & Strawberry T-Tonic. Alternatively, you can show your support by purchasing drink vouchers to use at a later date – see here for more info.

The Old Man

Good news! The Old Man – the Hemingway-inspired haunt and everyone’s favorite place to take out-of-towners – is now doing home deliveries to all major districts. They’re offering any of the cocktails from this menu in various sizes, but do note that they need a lead time of 1-2 days to prep all the ingredients. Your drinks will arrive freshly made, with ice and garnishes, and will keep for 1 week.

The Shady Acres

Here’s another Peel Street gem for our fellow Soho regulars – The Shady Acres is now offering their food and drink for takeaway and delivery. Menus change daily so check out their Instagram and Facebook stories for more details, but expect playful takes on comfort food, niche Australian and South African wines, and a couple of Shady specials. There’s no delivery fee and no service charge, but their delivery radius is limited since the Shady crew is hand delivering every order on their very own bike.

Delivers to: “Very local” addresses, a.k.a. anywhere within 15 minutes’ ride from Soho

The Wise King

Considering that The Wise King launched bottled cocktails just before the government decided to close all bars, we’d say that their name is pretty well deserved. Drink like royalty from the comfort of your own home with a king-sized 750ml bottle of any of their cocktails. The crowd-pleasing King’s Negroni is always a good shout, or you can try their limited edition Washed Negroni for a twist on the classic. Bottles are HKD598 or HKD1,000 if you cop two, and they might be able to do same-day delivery if you message early enough in the day. Starting tomorrow, they’ll also have special Easter gift hampers that come with your Negroni of choice and four cans each of Sprezza Bianco and Sprezza Rosso for HKD1,368. Hop to it.

To Be Frank

Kennedy Town’s best neighborhood hangout To Be Frank has been bottling their cocktails since day 1, but what used to seem like a cute, efficient way to prep drinks has turned out to be a stroke of brilliance. All your TBF favourites (as well as a selection of beers and spirits) are now available for local delivery from 3-9pm, and can be at your doorstep within 30 minutes of confirmation. As a thank you to their customers, the TBF team has even reduced prices by 20 percent, so go give them some love.
