SOULS OF HONG KONG – We met Mr Wat at the Freespace Fest 2013 in West Kowloon Waterfront Promenade. Wat was showing event-goers Chinese calligraphy writing with a brush pen. Many of those admiring his craft praised his handwriting and assumed he was a professional calligrapher. Mr. Wat, however, responded very modestly, “After retirement, I practiced Chinese calligraphy on old newspapers at home to kill time. I’m glad people appreciate my work.” he said.
When we asked Mr. Wat to write something for the Hong Kong people, he immediately wrote two beautiful Chinese characters that read harmony.
Souls of Hong Kong is a new Coconuts series of street portrait photography inspired by Brandon Stanton’s Humans of New York. Every human has a story to tell, and we intend to share some from the millions of souls who call Hong Kong home.
