Yesterday’s weather proved too tough for some, with 13,000 would-be-runners deciding not to get out of bed for the marathon.

Only 61,000 out of the 74,000 that registered made it to the starting line amid the lashing rain and wind.

However, the weather, which was the worst in the race’s history, according to the SCMP, may have help reduce the number of injuries and even deaths. Only 10 people were hospitalised yesterday and none of the cases are thought to be serious.

As usual, there were costumed runners; most notably this year were the sharks (see header photo), raising awareness about the cruelty of shark’s fin soup.

Not so typical was the proposal seen at the finish line (no photos, sorry). We bet she’s glad she got out of bed!

African runners took the top medals, with 29-year-old Kenyan Mike Kiprotich Mutai winning the men’s race in 2 hours and 12 minutes and 25-year-old Ethiopian Haylay Letebrhan Gebreslasea winning the women’s in 2 hours and 36 minutes.

Christy You Kit-ching, Hong Kong’s Olympic hopeful for Rio De Janeiro, came in sixth. Attagirl!
