Two puppies saved from dog meat butcher in Isaan

Two dogs were rescued yesterday from a miserable jail cell in the North Eastern province of Bueng Kan before they could be butchered for the dog meat trade.

In a horrific scene, authorities caught Sawang Kamkaew, 57, the dog butcherer, red-handed while he was dismembering a dog at a home in Bann Huayseuam Tai.

Police also found two dog carcasses at the home. The two dogs police found alive, estimated to be 5-6 months old, were locked up in a concrete cell.

Sawang confessed that he had been trading dog meat for a very long time. He usually buys dogs or obtains dogs for free from locals who want to get rid of their pets because they attack their chickens and ducks.

He sells a bag of dog meat for THB80 – THB100. Each bag weighs about 500-800 grams.

Sawang was charged with animal cruelty and trading in dog meat. He was detained at Mueang Bueng Kan Police station.

The two rescued dogs were taken in by Bueng Karn Livestock Department and Soi Dog Foundation. The pups will be put up for adoption once they are back to full health, Thairath reported.
