Zero-Proof Valentine’s: Police vow strict enforcement of dry Friday

Consider this your warning. If you plan to get tipply on Valentine’s Day by popping some champagne, sipping wine, guzzling beer or pounding lao khao, you better stock up before midnight Thursday.

Because technically, officially, it won’t be available for sale as Friday is also Makha Bucha Day, an important Buddhist holiday. Of course, that is unlikely to stop the industrious or determined from finding their fix in this City of the Possible.

Just to be clear: Consuming liquor or getting stupid drunk? Not illegal. Selling it? Illegal.

That said, the Royal Thai Police issued a warning to the public at a news conference this afternoon that the sale of alcohol is forbidden and will be strictly enforced.

As Valentine’s Day takes place on the same day, police officials said they’ve made it a priority and instructed all stations throughout the capital to monitor nightclubs, hotels, Internet cafes markets and elsewhere fine beverages are sold, INN News reported.
