Finally, Bangkok, that Mr. Bean-themed restaurant we’ve all been dreaming of is here

COCONUTS HOTSPOT  “What we didn’t want was another Hello Kitty- or Doraemon-themed place,” said Alice Tsoi of Thonglor’s new Mr. Bean Coffee Shop. “We love Mr. Bean because everyone loves Mr. Bean.”

Hear that, everyone?

Certainly Smith Tsoi, the other half of the brother-sister operation agrees. “I remember watching him on the van to school every day,” he said. “I think it’s such a great time watching him do funny things.”

Reselling adults their childhood heroes is nothing new, if measured by the remakes streaming from Hollywood film factories, a lesson not lost on these young entrepreneurs, for whom Mr. Bean represented an interesting commercial opportunity for their new breakfast-and-coffee joint.

Spot the 60’s Mini Cooper with the Union Jack parked outside, and you know you’ve arrived. Inside diners can watch the Mr. Bean animated series on a large LCD television or take a look the lovable-yet-goofy character’s portraits. Copyright attorneys, put down that stack of cease and desist letters: Alice and Smith have gone through all the appropriate channels to license the use of Mr. Bean.

The hangout spot may not be a coffee aficionado’s ideal stomping ground; instead it focuses on creating a convivial atmosphere appealing to a wide range of demographics, including die-hard Bean fans. A 12oz. Latte will set you back THB90, while specialty drinks like the Butterscotch Mocha or the Mr. Bean’s Signature style ring in at THB120, a perfect drink to discuss the finer points of British comedian Rowan Atkinson’s Mr. Bean character development over.

A host of all day English-inspired breakfast plates have been put together for diners who want to do more than simply sip while reveling at Mr. Bean’s slapstick craziness. England’s take on the classic omelet, the “GB Omelet” (THB145) comes loaded with a healthy dose of ‘shrooms, or try a healthier variety using just egg whites for the same price. The omnipresent eggs benedict gets the Mr. Bean treatment, and that means it comes neatly prepared with a slice of smoked salmon tucked underneath a poached egg.
