Yasothon unearths 19th-century ship (VIDEO)

As if last month’s rocket festival and giant toad museum weren’t enough, Yasothon has to show off again this week with the discovery a buried wooden ship thought to be two centuries old.

Hundreds of people yesterday have been digging up the 30-meter vessel from the Say Bai Dam since June 15, while others slipped aboard to glean some lucky lottery numbers and worship the old boat with red Fanta.

Head workman Pornthep Looplor said someone spotted the wooden frame after the dam went dry last week. The community’s eldest seniors, some over 100, told them it looked like those once used to transport rice from Ubon Ratchathani.

Apparently Yasothon has dug up many antique-to-ancient boats, but Pornthep believes this find might be the biggest yet found in Isaan.

Two backhoes were deployed for the effort, and police have contacted the national Department of Fine Arts to help confirm the age and value of the ship, Morning News reported.

It will be put on display at Wat Baan Chiang Peng for folks to check out.

This video of the lively action was posted online yesterday.
