Yaba, ‘gik’ and Brit: Love triangle turns deadly

Police in Udon Thani are searching for man who may have strangled his married lover to death in a crime of passion, or yadong-fueled madness, yesterday.

The victim was Sunee Downer, 37, who was found dead and lying on her stomach in the bathroom of her two-story home in the Baan Lao Soong area with a red cord around her neck.

The deceased was the wife of a successful British businessman. They were married for ten years and had two children. The foreign man often spent time abroad for his work. It was during these times that Sunee would have her affair or “gik” in Thai, visit her home, according to police.

During his last visit, he may have killed her.

Chawit Srichan, from the Udon police department, named Thongsai Phurachato, 36 as Sunee’s lover and known yaba addict. The two had argued frequently before Sunee’s death with Thongsai accusing her of seeing a third man.

Sunee’s father, who knew of the affair, told police that Thongsai had threatened to kill his daughter before if she left him, but he did not believe it would happen.

That was a belief that may be proved wrong. Thongsai was seen driving Sunee’s white Mazda car from her home just a half-hour before she was found dead.

When the police arrived, Sunee’s bedroom had been destroyed. Her gold necklace, a laptop, a cell phone and some cash were also gone, according to Daily News.

Police have named Thongsai as the wanted suspect and they expect to take him into custody quickly. The foreign husband has not been named.
